Genesis 25:29-34; I Peter 2:9
Esau had been out hunting all day and he was famished. He was so hungry, in fact, that he was willing to trade his birthright for a bowl of stew. Jacob, Esau’s brother, offered him a bowl of stew in exchange for Esau’s birthright as the first born. Esau was quick to take the trade.
Wow! What a lopsided bargain. The birthright established leadership, spiritual authority and was part of the covenant promise given to Abraham. We are part of a royal priesthood, a chosen generation with a godly heritage. When we make the choice to fulfill our desires and sin against God vs. choosing to obey Him, we are guilty of compromising our birthright as children adopted into the family of God!
Reflect
Choosing to satisfy our physical desires will distort our spiritual values!
Request
Dear God: Give me the determination to trust You with my physical needs and desires. I know that You have given me certain desires as a human being. I dedicate myself to bringing them under the control of the Holy Spirit as I anticipate Your provision.
Amen.
