Matthew 19:16-30, Mark 10:17-31, Luke 18:18-30
Obviously, the rich young ruler wasn’t satisfied with the comforts he enjoyed because of his wealth. Why else would he ask Jesus how could he gain eternal life?! The rich young ruler hoped that he could offer Jesus his good works and maintain his wealth in return for what Jesus required. Clearly, he was not content, so why did he value what he already knew could not save or satisfy him over Jesus, who could offer contentment and eternal life?
Reflect
We don’t get to ‘have it our way.’ What enticements threaten to keep us from God? Wealth? Power? Prestige? Relationships? “No one who has left home or wife or brothers or sisters or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God will fail to receive many times as much in this age, and in the age to come eternal life.” Luke 18:29-30
